Shops

Unless you are modelling open countryside, at least one shop is likely to be needed on your layout. Many towns have shops in different architectural styles spanning several decades. The Kingsway Models range of shops reflects this.

Many of the buildings are described as having 'traditional' or 'modern' shop fronts included. Inevitably such descriptions are prone to become meaningless!  Generally, you may take 'traditional' to be from the middle 20th century, and 'modern' to be from the 1980s onwards. Obviously there will be overlaps of period. The buildings could quite easily be fitted with customised shopfronts if required.

The never ending range of potential shop models appeals greatly to me, so doubtless the range of buildings listed here will continue to grow. As you seek to fill your model High Street, do remember to look at the other categories as well. Cinemas are hard to resist, or maybe a pub - there are examples large and small. The miscellaneous buildings page may have ideas that will be useful.

DGS kit to build a 1/76 scale High Street

The DGS (Dutch Gabled Shops) kit comes with a choice of nine shopfronts. The entire set is seen above displayed across three kits. The architecture is based on an example in south London.

Marks & Spencer card shop kit 1/76

The new MSB Marks & Spencer kit (left) has now been added to the range of shop kits. The building is based on a real shop in Buxton, Derbyshire, that is now used by a different business - as is the fate of so many stores.

It's an ideal model to use in a British HIgh Street along with the WWMD Woolworths building (right). A variety of different signs are included to represent several periods.

These small shops comprise the SAS Station Approach Shops kit. They are typical of those that were commonly seen near to a railway station. There are eight different businesses in 18". The model is 4.5" deep including the supplied paving.

Retail Park Shop Unit card kit 1/76 scale

There are also modern style shops in the range. The RPU Retail Park unit kit may be constructed as two half relief buildings as shown above, or as a single full relief building with loading bay doors at the rear. Six different shop signs are included.
